Most resorts will have at least some areas that will suit the expert skier/snowboarder. Black runs vary and can often lack the challenge most would like and should in fact be graded as a red run. Andorra is perhaps not the best place to be if you are looking for a more challenging off slope experience. Alpe-d’Huez. Argentiere, Chamonix, Val-d’Isere and La Garve are a great favourite for off slope aficionados who aim for France. Whilst many expert skiers look to travel to Switzerland and flock to Verbier, Andermatt and Klosters. Austria gets a look in with Lech, Zurs and Bad Gastein. High mileage piste bashing takes place at Whistler in Canada and Beaver Creek in Colorado for those wishing to travel a bit further a field.
But where ever you seek the splendor of untouched powder you should be very aware of the risks and take suitable precautions to ensure your safety and the safety of others.
Skiing under the influence of alcohol or drugs is dangerous to you and all others around you. It numbs your responses and distorts your perception of danger. You should be aware of your limitations and not feel under pressure to perform moves or ski in areas that are above your experience and capability.
If you ski for any length of time there will be occasions when you feel ready to move onto the next step and eventually want to leave the unmarked runs completely. Off piste skiing or back country skiing should never be experienced without the utmost caution and should never be attempted without forward planning and or the use of a guide.

- You should check that you are in an area that allows you to venture off the marked runs. Some locations are protected and you could face heavy fines if caught.
- Never venture off alone — take a guide.
- Make sure you are aware of the weather conditions before you set off, never travel if there is the likelihood of fog or a blizzard looming. If you do travel in avalanche threatened areas, make sure you have a transceiver and the tools to dig yourself out.
- Always inform others of your intended whereabouts and the time you expect to arrive at your destination. Plan a course of action if you are not back at the agreed time.
- Ensure you are fully insured for off piste skiing.
