Overview

Last Frontier is a Heli Skiing centre based in the majestic Skeena Mountain Range, Canada, on the Bell Irving River Valley at a height of 1900ft about 220m northwest of Smithers, British Columbia. It was built in the mid seventies and provides a limitless amount of challenging mostly un-skied terrain. The resort is set in the largest heli skiing area in the world and is heavily glaciated, with stunning scenery and amazing tree runs. Accommodation is provided in cosy chalets with wood burning fires surrounding the main lodge with a maximum of 30 guests a week. With no more than 5 skiers or boarders plus a guide per helicopter this is an intimate heli skiing experience.

Profile

Safety is of utmost importance at Last Frontier; heli skiing does have its risks and the guides are very aware of these and because of this the whole experience is continuously monitored in order to minimize the hazards. Tree skiing is only allowed in pairs for safety. Guests ski, on average, 10 to 12 runs a day and over 30,000 vertical feet. All accommodation, eating and drinking is based in and around the base lodge and is surprisingly reasonable for such a small group. There is also a drying room with individual glove and boot dryers. As for the experience, suffice it to say that the guides and pilots are knowledgeable and friendly, the scenery is fantastic, and the skiing itself is awesome.

Mountain Information

Last Frontier is only for expert skiers/boarders. The lodge is centrally located in the ski area and some of the runs are only a few minutes away, particularly those located in amongst the trees. The ski area itself is some 3500 square miles and the distance of the glacier and alpine bowl runs are only limited by the endurance of your legs and by the range of the helicopter. The almost endless opportunities of challenging terrain are facilitated by an abundance of snow and the quality of the runs here are magnificent and will far exceed the expectations of even the most demanding skier. The guides and pilots are very experienced, professional and friendly.

Apres Ski

Après ski at Last Frontier is a very relaxed and quiet affair. There is a Sauna and Jacuzzi/ hot tub next to the chalets to relax in and a masseuse is always available to help ease away those aches and pains. Food is available in the dining area in the main lodge and there is a bar and games room. The nearby Bell Irving River Valley can be explored on snowshoes and if you are lucky, you may just see a wolf or a moose on your travels.
