Overview

One of the original purpose built high altitude ski resorts, the Italian resort of Brueil — Cervinia was built in the 1930s. Close to the border with Switzerland, the spectacular scenery of this resort is dominated by the Matterhorn and it is linked to the Swiss resort of Zermatt by lift, for which a combined ski pass can be obtained. Brueil — Cervinia is one of the very rare ski resorts in the world with an excellent snow and sun record. Overall the resort caters for the full range of skiing and boarding ability, especially when taken in combination with the Zermatt resort.

Profile

Brueil — Cervinia has the highest lift in Europe and a 22km long run. The resort is typically Italian purpose built, with a range of varying architectural styles. It can hardly be called beautiful, but neither is it ugly, however, the spectacular scenery more than makes up for this and you probably won’t notice the mis match of design! The resort itself is more suited to beginners and intermediates, the experts will find themselves drawn across the Swiss border to Zermatt. Don’t forget your passport though, the borders are still in place as Switzerland is not part of the EC and you will need it!

Mountain Information

The wide open slopes above the resort are served by cabin lifts and are perfect for beginners and near beginners. The majority of the ski instructors here speak English and are very patient. The stunning scenery and long trails are excellent for intermediates and the high altitude makes for good snow cover, even when the sun is shining. For the experts, there are six black runs above the resort and the steep runs of Zermatt just across the border.

The resort boasts some of the longest on-paste descents in the world with the run from Kline Matterhorn down to Valtournenche, a vertical drop in excess of 2350m and 22km long as well as the very poplar 8km red down to the Plateau Rosa from the resort itself. There are also three high altitude loops, one of which is at resort level for cross country skiers and the wide slopes offer opportunity for free boarding for snow boarders.

Apres Ski

Brueil — Cervinia does have a reputation for pricey après ski, but this mainly due to the day trippers from nearby Turin and Milan who pack out the night clubs, bars and restaurants. However, there is a large choice of bars and restaurants and there are two night clubs which are open until the early hours of the morning. There are organised trips to the casino in nearby Saint Vincent and snowshoeing, snow kiting, snow hiking and tobogganing are also popular. The resort has a natural ice rink and a cinema which is based in the village’s bowling alley; the more adventurous can go Heli Skiing from the 4500m high Monte Rosa.
