The resort village of Clavier, is a moderately attractive, traditionally built community, just across the Franco/Italian border from Montgenevre. Standing within the Milky Way ski region, it is well placed for the extensive slopes which can all be skied on the shared pass that covers the whole area, but which has to be purchased in Montgenevre. The village itself is divided into two by the busy main road, but despite this maintains a quiet and friendly atmosphere that attracts visitors to return here year after year. There is a good deal of averagely priced accommodation to be found in the village, ranging from hotels to self catering apartments. It is also possible to stay up the mountain actually at the side of the piste that runs from Sagnalonga to the neighbouring village of Cesana. There is the full range of shops, bars and restaurants to be found here and prices tend to be lower than in near neighbour France.
The village stands at 1760m and provides direct access to 100 km of its own slopes that it shares with Montgenevre. It also allows access to the full 400 km of the Milky Way slopes that are served by a total of 91 lifts. The region has an excellent reputation for snow cover and there are snow making facilities covering 100 km of slopes. The black runs are totally over classified and confident intermediates will manage them easily. For off piste skiing however, there is plenty of first class, deep powder country all over the region, so advanced skiers do have plenty to explore.
Intermediates will find that the resort is made for them with its wide cruising pistes and pleasant runs down through the trees. Boarders are well catered for and it has a reputation as a good place to learn, although there are rather too many drag lifts for comfort. Experts will enjoy the off piste opportunities and there is a well equipped terrain park. Those just learning to ski will discover that Clavier is an excellent place to learn and although the local nursery slopes are rather small, they are seldom busy. The local ski schools are generally very good.
The local slopes are accessed via a lift from the village that takes you to Plan del Sole. From there the rest of the area is easily reached via a series of blue and red runs that are just made for intermediate skiers. Some of the easier slopes are to be found over at the Les Anges sector where the cruises can be made along wide motorway pistes, while the slopes immediately above Clavier are a charming mixture of wooded runs and shoots through rocky outcrops. The Le Chalvet sector provides some memorable scenery and there is a wonderful long blue run that returns you direct to the village. Experts will find the best off piste country over at l’Alpet and Sagnalonga. There are plenty of good quality restaurants to be found on the slopes.
The atmosphere in this little village is great. There are some excellent bars and restaurants, but because of its focus as a primarily family resort, it is not the most buzzing place for night life. A generally lively time can be found at the Gallo Cedrone`s karaoke bar and Gran Bouc is very popular with the younger set.
