Ski insurance for winter sports enthusiasts including snow boarders with repatriation cover

Overview

Treble Cone, New Zealand’s largest south island ski and snowboard resort, is situated close to Wanaka some 55km from Queenstown, where the majority of the wide range of accommodation can be found. The resort is spread over three large basins which offer advanced, exciting skiing and snowboarding with steep gradients and a vertical drop of 660m. Treble Cone, named after the cluster of cone shaped rocks on the summit of the mountain, was only opened in 1976 and as such is a relatively new resort. Its location enables it to access some of the most awesome mountain terrain in New Zealand and it has some breathtaking views of Lake Wanaka. The resort has a regular shuttle bus from Wanaka; however the access road is not for the faint of heart as it is rather daunting!

Profile

Although best known for advanced skiing, Treble Cone has good terrain for all levels of ability. The resort is particularly family friendly and the ski school instructors are patient. There is a purpose built learner area with a Magic Carpet Lift; great fun for the younger members of the family! The nearest settlement of Wanaka is a laid back place on the shores of Lake Wanaka and it is here that the majority of the wide range of accommodation is provided to please all tastes and budgets. Wanaka is situated in a beautiful location where the jagged, snow covered peaks of the Mount Aspiring National Park meet the hills of Central Otago.

Mountain Information

The learner area, situated near the base building, has a wide and gentle slope with an easy gradient and snowmaking facilities. The area is serviced by an easy to use lift and is groomed every night. There are two trails, Triple Treat which is 3.5km long and Main Street, 2km long, which provide well groomed slopes for beginners and intermediates. These trails are serviced by a high speed six seater chairlift and the new quad chairlift. For the advanced skier and boarder, Treble Cone offers more terrain at this level than any other South Island resort and the free riding terrain and off piste powder are excellent. The mountain did use to suffer from snow loss, due to the steep gradients, but this has been significantly improved with the new snow making facilities.

Apres Ski

The majority of après ski activities happen in Wanaka, although Treble Cone itself does have a number of bars and restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets. At Wanaka, there is a maze and bungee jumping, horse riding, kayaking, canyoning, rock climbing and mountain biking are just a few of the activities on offer. The bars and restaurants here are laid back and extremely friendly as well as being good value for money; the town hall also becomes a cinema at weekends and is well frequented.
