Overview

There are five main ski resorts in Romania, all within a 10km radius of each other. Poiana Brasov is the largest of these and has some stunning scenery. It is also where most of the facilities exist and is a well respected international ski resort. The smaller resorts of Sinaia, Predeal, Azuga and Busteni are quieter and less well known, but are easily accessible from Poiana Brasov by bus. All resorts offer excellent skiing which is particularly suitable for beginners and families. If you are looking for value for money with a friendly atmosphere, Romania is the place to come.

Profile

The traffic free, purpose built resort of Poiana Brasov has a compact lift system, close to the modern, clean accommodation, and is set amongst the picturesque pine forests of the Carpathian mountains. Sinaia is known as the ‘Royal Resort of Carpathians Pearl’ due to its historical links with the Romania royal family and the hotels, museums and castles here offer plenty of sightseeing opportunities. Predeal is the highest resort at 1100m and is located in between the nearby Bucegi and Baiului mountains. There is a lift system being built to link the resort with Azuga and Busteni.

Mountain Information

The nursery slopes in Poiana Brasov are situated in the village, close to the village pond, and on the plateau on top of the mountain. The resort has a long blue run back into the village, which allows for easy progression to the main pistes. The ski instructors are excellent in all of the Romania resorts; you will come away feeling that you have learnt good techniques whilst still remembering the basics. The slopes are floodlit at night, which makes for some enchanting skiing for the more experienced and is simply gorgeous to watch from the resort whilst sipping an après ski drink. Experts will be kept busy with three downhill and giant slalom runs and an old Olympic run to explore.

Apres Ski

The resorts are so close to each other that the après ski facilities simply merge together. There are plenty of shops, bars and restaurants, although most of these are Romania or German based. The food is excellent, particularly the local fare, and it is inexpensive. The clubs are open late and there is a swimming pool, sauna and fitness centre. The Sinaia Casino Palace has a huge billiard and pool room as well as the inevitable gambling games. There is a bus service to the medieval Saxon town of Brasov some 13km away, where culture and history simply ooze from the buildings and the nightlife is superb; there is a weekly ‘Citadel’ evening at the Carpathian Stag where you can eat your meal whilst listening to the Brasov Philharmonic Orchestra. As far as excursions go, if you only manage to do one it has to be the horse drawn sleigh ride to the real Dracula’s Castle, simply awesome!
