Located just 6 kms from the Austrian and Italian borders Kranjska Gora achieves its status as Slovenia’s best known resort thanks to the annual world cup slalom and giant slalom races which take place there. It is a reasonably picturesque town with an Austrian ambience offering prices much less than its near neighbours. With 20 lifts including 16 drag lifts the majority of the tree lined runs are quite low on the mountain and only a few are served by snowmaking, but this number is steadily increasing.
Most of the skiing and boarding is on runs served by a series of parallel drag lifts. There are short, open beginners runs at village level. There are three moderately long black runs round on the Podkoren mountain where the World Cup slalom run is. Otherwise the majority of the terrain is best suited to beginners and early intermediates.
Apres ski is quite lively at times, but is made all the better by the competitive prices. The Club disco is reported to be ood; there is a casino, swimming pool and daily excursions for those who like a day away from the slopes. Eating out is cheap and includes game dishes, Italian and traditional Austrian food. The ski school is available for all standards and takes children from 3-12 years old, while there is a children’s mini-club at the Hotel Kompas for 4-12 year olds. The resort is reckoned to be good for a modestly priced family learn to ski holiday.
