Overview

Wengen, located at the base of the Eiger mountain range, is a fantastic resort for mixed groups; compact with lovely wide runs so that mixed ability groups can ski together. The resort has a stress free and very relaxing atmosphere, largely due to the scenery. The awe inspiring landscape, both of the mountain range and the valleys, make for an almost spiritual experience, which only serves to heightened the on ski or board experience. The resort is a great place for children to learn to ski, not only are the local ski schools English speaking, but the instructors obviously enjoy teaching the youngsters and as a result the children enjoy learning. Wengen is built along a main street with a railway station at one end. This railway station is the only means of accessing Wengen and as a result the resort is car free. Wengen is perhaps most well known for its World Cup downhill course, the demanding Lauberhorn.

Profile

The only route into Wengen is the historic Wengernalp Railway. This serves to make Wengen sedate and stress free; visitors are just as happy sitting enjoying the scenery and the atmosphere as they are rushing off to ski. The village has some excellent hotels and restaurants, but there are some fantastic mountain eateries as well. Families are well catered for here; the locals are very friendly and can accommodate even the youngest of children at the ski school and in the restaurants. All in all, Wengen is probably the perfect skiing holiday destination; picture postcard scenery, friendly locals and great skiing.

Mountain Information

The ski slopes in Wengen are placed on all four sides of the mountain, ensuring all day skiing in the sun. There are 19 lifts, 15 blue runs, 25 red and 10 black. The nursery slopes are located in Wengen itself ands the English speaking ski schools are friendly and efficient. At the top of the mountain is the Jungfrau ski area, which will greatly impress intermediates with wide open, long runs above the tree line. Experts will want to grab the chance of skiing the Lauberhorn themselves, all be it a little slower than the World Cup skiers, but they will need to be brave, some of the jumps are like launching yourself into the sky, and the gradient of the descent is 90% in places.

Apres Ski

Wengen après ski is very similar to Wengen at any other time of day; sedate, unhurried and stress free. There are plenty of bars and restaurants, offering drinks and meals which you can enjoy outside in amongst the scenery. Tobogganing is available on the 50km stretch of toboggan runs and there are over 100km of walking paths. Out of the village there is the option of the train which gives access to the valley and to Murren and Interlaken.
