Know before you go
The Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) launched their Know Before You Go campaign during 2001 with the aim to educate travellers from the UK on aspects of travel safety and health travelling abroad.
We have highlighted some of the most important messages the FCO wish to relay to all travellers abroad.
FCO Tips to Stay Safe and Healthy Abroad
- Many travellers do not have adequate travel insurance. This puts an added burden on friends and family members who are often left to foot the bill for expensive medical treatment and repatriation
- Always check the FCO's “Travel Advice by Country” information if you think you may be about to travel anywhere there are particular problems such as civil unrest or adverse weather conditions. If the FCO advise against travel to your chosen destination, your travel insurance will not necessarily cover you.
- Do as much research of your chosen destination(s) by reading up on the local laws and customs.
- Be aware of any health risks when travelling to your chosen countries. Check with your doctor and ensure you get the necessary jabs/medication in plenty of time before you leave.
- Ensure your passport is still valid for the whole time you are away and the expiry date is within the limits set by the countries you are visiting.
- Apply for any visas which may be required well in advance of your trip dates.
- Make copies of all your travel documents and make others at home aware of any important contact numbers in case of emergency.
- Take some local currency and also have access to emergency funds should you need them.
- Always tell someone else where you are going and provide them with your emergency contact details.
