Mount Buller is Victoria’s premier ski resort winning the Australian Ski Award for Best Year Round Resort two years running. The resort is located 250km north west of Melbourne on the eastern extreme of the Delatite River adjoining land managed by the Department of Natural Resources and Environment in prime wine making country. As such, the resort boasts spectacular terrain, both alpine and sub-alpine. Mount Buller has facilities for all abilities of skier and a range of accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets. The resort is host to the Philips Mobile Phones FIS World Aerials, the only World Cup Skiing event in Australia, which is held in July.
Set among the indigenous gum forests, Mount Buller Alpine Resort is very popular with the inhabitants of Melbourne as it has the largest uplift capability in Australia and can mean that it can get very busy at weekends. The mountain caters for all abilities of skiers and there is an extremely good ski school for all ages. Accommodation is plentiful and varied at the resort itself but can be a touch pricey. A less expensive alternative is in the town of Mansfield 47km away.
Rising to 1805 feet above sea level, Mount Buller is fast emerging as Australia’s best alpine resort. It has over 180 hectares of ski trails and wide open spaces above the tree lines. The 25 ski lifts are capable of moving over 40,000 people an hour and, as such, queues are non existent. The extensive range of 80kms of terrain ensures that there is an even mix of riding and skiing for all ages and abilities with some of the most challenging downhill runs in Australia. There is plenty of snow due to the extensive snowmaking facilities and the runs are well groomed. The longest ski trail is 2.5km and in general the skiing is at a good intermediate level. From the summit the runs are tricky and black and if icy can become dangerous.
Mount Buller resort has a great range of pubs and restaurants all within easy walking distance. Night skiing, tobogganing and ice skating are available in the village and there is a supermarket and a cinema, screening twice daily. Snow tubing is also available at the Spurs Tubing Park, entry to which is free when you purchase a sightseeing pass for the Horse Hill and Blue Bullet chairlifts. Mount Buller has a number of ski hire shops and boutiques and a museum and there are day trips to the local vineyards, where you can sample a glass or two! The resort as a whole is busy and vibrant, buoyed by the day trippers from Melbourne.
