Les Coches is a major part of the huge La Plagne ski area, one of the largest ski areas in the world. It is a modern, purpose built village located on the west side of La Plagne, surrounded by woodland. The village offers a welcoming atmosphere in a traditional setting. At 1450m, Les Coches is one of the lower villages of the La Plagne resort, but the excellent network of lifts and transport ensures that there is access to 215km of piste, most of which are located above 2500m. Skiers of all abilities are well catered for here and the resort is highly regarded by Snow Boarders. Après ski facilities are abundant and all ages are catered for.
The resort of Les Coches was created in 1980. It has been deliberately designed to look like a village, with its picturesque limestone roofs and stone and wood chalets. However the village itself is entirely devoted to snow sports, it is traffic free and the comprehensive snow cannon system ensures ski in ski out throughout the whole of the season.
From La Plagne there is a cable car to Les Arcs giving access to Paradiski where there is a fantastic funiculaire or mountain railway, well worth the visit for the spectacular views. Paradiski also offers more ski runs, over half of which are blue, as well as an abundance of lifts which ensures queuing is minimal. For Snow Boarders, La Plagne has three outstanding snow parks, one of which is naturally made, meandering between pine and larch trees with plenty of handrails and jumps.
Les Coches is north facing and so is generally snow sure. The resort caters for all abilities, but is particularly geared around the beginner and intermediate skier. There is a vast choice of undemanding blue runs, most of which wind through the woodland with gorgeous scenery. The resort has access to 215km of pistes, 3 Snow Parks and 105 ski lifts. There are some 290 snow cannons covering 95 hectares of land, which ensure snow is always available. Of the 134 pisted runs, there are 11 green, 79 blue, 34 red and 10 black, which guarantee all abilities are kept happy.
The ice rink at Les Coches is open daily and is well frequented, particularly at night. Nearby is a games room offering a library, toys, games, pool table, pinball and a Play station, all under the supervision of a qualified youth leader. A weekly shuttle to La Plagne operates and here you will find a toboggan and bobsleigh run. Back in Les Coches, there is a cinema with 2 or 3 screenings daily and there are plenty of shops, pubs, bars, restaurants and a nightclub.
