Overview

The resort of Les Gets is a pleasant, traditional village with old style chalet buildings featuring prominently. It is situated on the main Morzine Road and enjoys a particularly sunny aspect and yet it is a surprisingly quiet resort and is only liable to become busy at week ends. Much of the centre is pedestrianised and holds a very good selection of interesting shops and restaurants. The village offers a choice of accommodation on offer ranging from some excellent medium class hotels and plenty of good quality self catering apartments. Some catered chalets are also available. Most of the local restaurants are attached to the hotels and many of them have excellent reputations and require advanced booking. For non-skiers Les Gets has its own fitness centre and an excellent outdoor skating rink among its other attractions. It is also close enough to the Swiss border to make day trips to Geneva and other Swiss cities an option.

Profile

Les Gets stands at 1170m in the enormous Portes du Soleil ski area. It is next to its sister resort of Morzine and shares the same runs although the home slopes of Mont Chery that rises above the village provide some of the best runs in the region. In total, the Portes du Soleil offers 650 km of piste that are served by 206 lifts all of which are covered by the Portes du Soleil ski pass. Because of its relatively low altitude, Les Gets is not the most snow sure resort and many of the lower slopes often suffer as a result. There are however plenty of snow cannons that are strategically placed to ensure that skiing is generally possible whatever the weather conditions. Expert skiers and boarders will find a number of excellent blacks that will provide plenty of challenges and there are wide areas of terrific off piste areas to explore. Intermediates of all levels of competence will also discover that the resort has plenty to offer them, ranging from wide cruising runs to tricky little reds and blues. The nursery slopes for beginners are conveniently positioned at the edge of the village and there are plenty of runs nearby on which to progress. Snowboarders are very welcome in the resort which contains some excellent areas on which to learn and improve and also has a first class terrain park. Cross country skiers have around 18 km of trails to explore. There is a choice of ski schools and some excellent child care facilities on offer.

Mountain Information

The main slopes of the Portes du Soleil over towards Morzine are reached by couple of lifts from the centre of Les Gets. Nearer to home however, experts and fairly confident intermediates alike will find that the unusually crowd free slopes of Mont Chery are wonderful and hard to better in the region. Snowboarders will also find the terrain park is located here. Mountain restaurants here are generally good and are fairly liberally scattered over the mountain.

Apres Ski

Les Gets has plenty of clubs and bars, including a disco. During weekdays, the scene is very quiet but it does get a bit livelier at the week ends.
