Known as the Pearl of the Alps, Saas Fee is exactly what you would expect of a ‘traditional’ Swiss village; stunning mountain views, clean air, narrow streets and chocolate box chalets. The picturesque village is largely traffic free with the exception of electric Taxis and lies on a high glacier plateau at the foot of the Mischabel Mountains, the highest in Switzerland. The alps surround the whole village so the scenery is awesome and the silence beautiful. Saas Fee has something to offer all skiers, regardless of ability and it is an ideal place to learn: consequently it is popular with families and the locals are extremely family friendly. The resort has an excellent range of accommodation to suit all pockets and tastes.
Saas Fee has some of the world’s best skiing, which is guaranteed year round because of Saas Fee is home to some of the world’s most spectacular scenery, from stunning glaciers to 4000m peaks. Its neighbour, Zermatt shares much of this scenery. Saas Fee is connected to the Mittelallalin glacier by the world’s highest funicular railway; it is also home to the world’s highest revolving restaurant at 3500m. The resort can suffer from a lack of sun in the winter, due partly to the proximity of the Dom Mountain, which is one of the highest in Switzerland, but this does not seem to detract from the resort’s popularity, as skiers and boarders alike return year after year for the excellent skiing conditions.
Due to it’s glacial location, snow is 100% guaranteed year round and all slopes not on the glacier have a snow cannon. The ski school at Saas Fee has a superb reputation and the nursery slopes are in the centre of the village so are easily accessible. For novices there are 20 blue runs and when you are ready, 19 scenic red runs await you.
Intermediates can embark on day long ski tours which help to improve techniques and allow the area to be explored. Experts are not left out either, there are some excellent black runs and mountain tours to provide a challenge for all but the very experienced. Saas Fee is the official training centre of the Professional Snowboarding Association; due in part to the fantastic boarder school, but it isn’t that good for middle ability boarders.
Saas Fee has no shortage of bars, restaurants and clubs. The range is fantastic, from lively bars with live music to quiet informal cafes. The majority of the clubs have free entry most nights and most are open until dawn. The facilities in Saas Fee are many and varied; Heli-skiing, a sports centre, tennis, badminton, swimming, sauna, an ice rink, tobogganing, husky tours and curling to name but a few. With plenty of shops, a cinema and a museum, there really is no need to stray very far from the resort to keep yourself entertained.
